Part 1: Kate Siobhan’s Epic Campervan Roap Trip along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way
With the last name Mulligan, I’ve always identified with Ireland as part of my heritage. This year, I turned 30 – and I celebrated it with a seriously epic road trip around the country in a Bunk Camper…
When we were planning our trip to Ireland last February, we decided to hire a campervan in Ireland to have the ultimate flexibility. We rented from Bunk Campers, and we were blown away with the Vista Plus. Seriously, it was nicer than some apartments we’ve lived in! It was spacious, with every creature comfort I could want. The freedom of a car is one thing, but a campervan really allowed us to safely get lost, roam, and explore to our heart’s content knowing we had everything we needed. We had nowhere to be except together, on the open road. Doesn’t that already sound like the start of a great adventure? Well, it was…
Stage 1: Donegal
We began touring the Wild Atlantic Way in Donegal Town. We strolled around the Diamond and explored the Donegal Castle, before driving up in our campervan to see the very top of the Slieve League (Sliabh Liag). That night, we parked our campervan on the sandy shores of Rossnowlagh. This windswept town was really appealing to us – broad and clean but full of families and surfers!
Stage 2: Sligo
From Donegal we continued south along the Wild Atlantic Way to Sligo. Thanks to our campervan, we had the freedom to stop along the way to take in the stunning Mullaghmore peninsula. Sligo really captured our hearts with its quaint downtown, many pubs, live music, and an obvious dedication to their history of poetry. We strolled, we ate traditional fish & chips, we sampled local brews in several pubs, and even caught a big rugby game at Hargadon’s.
I have to say – taking in a few pints of Guinness in a 300 year old thatched roof bar, falling asleep in your camper to the sound of the ocean, and waking up with the beach as your front yard – yup, that’s the way to do it! Our mornings were generally slow and luxurious, nowhere to be except stretched out in our on board living room, enjoying fresh coffee and look at maps to decide where the day would take us. It was total bliss…
