GUEST POST: Mike & Anne – “650 day honeymoon couple take a Bunk Camper 1,800kms around Ireland”
Ireland was the 30th country on our 650-day around the world honeymoon and we knew it had to be seen by campervan. With its rugged coastline, mountain passes, charming villages, and untouched beauty, the Emerald Isle is a place that begs to be explored. It’s hard to see an entire country in just ten days but with our Ireland Campervan Hire we were able to cover 1,800 kilometers of Ireland’s gorgeous landscape and discover places we would’ve never known about if we did the typical rent-car-stay-hotel-vacation. From Dublin to Northern Ireland and every peninsula in between, here is a little glimpse of our journey of a lifetime.
Touring along the rugged Cliffs of the Wild Atlantic Way
Each morning in our VW Ranger camper we would climb down from bed (we loved the high top roof) wake up and cook ourselves a hot breakfast then plot out the day’s route over a tall cup of coffee.
Ireland is world-famous for its rugged cliffs and beaches so we hugged the coastline whenever possible. We would find ourselves turning down little roads, even dead-ends because the gorgeous landscape would beckon us. Here on the Dingle Penenisula, we couldn’t help but stop for a stretch and stroll this beautiful beach.
Getting connected to Irish Culture
Not just a pretty place, Ireland is incredibly rich in culture. We were constantly pit-stopping at castles, art exhibits, jam sessions, and museums like the Glencolumbkille Folk Village Museum. This charming museum in the far flung northwestern Ireland had recreated traditional homes, a general store, a school and other examples to show Irish life through the ages. We tried to visit as many of these as possible with everything from the Waterford Harvest Festival to The Spirit of Folk Festival in county Meath. No matter when you come to Ireland, be sure to catch some of their incredible folk music!
A Campervan Takes you Anywhere!
One of the best parts about hiring a campervan in Ireland is that is that you can wild camp almost anywhere. We were driving the Healy Pass in County Cork and were mesmerized by this winding road over stone bridges and through the craggy mountains, that we simply had to call this place home for the night. We pulled over on a dirt road and were lulled to sleep by a babbling brook and woke up to views of the heather-covered hills. And we had it all to ourselves—what hotel can offer that?!
Not only can you wake up to the view of your choosing, you can dine that way too. We were driving the remote edges of Donegal and decided these dramatic cliffs would be the perfect lunch spot. So we whipped up a salmon feast, poured a frothy glass of Guinness, swung open our door and felt like we were at the most romantic restaurant in town.
Each day we made a point to picnic some place inspiring. The legendary Cliffs of Moher was a natural choice so we naturally packed a bottle of wine and cheese for our hike. We walked a few kilometers along the edge, awe-struck by the dramatic cliff face and crashing waves, and found our own little rock outcropping to toast the beauty of it all.
Choose your own Adventure
With camper van hire in Ireland, everyday is a choose-your-own-adventure. Turning down a cute street, detouring to catch a festival, pulling over to enjoy a sunset, and just going wherever inspires you…there is nothing better. With transportation and lodging rolled into one, we we loved the feeling of being completely self-sufficient and not having to worry about booking anything in advance…our Ireland campervan hire was everything we needed and more!
Thanks Bunk Campers!
