Germany Trip 2017: Lin & George’s route

We are Lin and George from Cumbria! Although we have camped extensively in Europe, we had never motorhomed before. Several of our friends have motorhomes and take off for weeks at a time to enjoy sunshine and scenery, so we thought that Germany Relocation Deal was an ideal way of trying a motorhome for ourselves.

We didn’t have a planned route but knew that we needed to be near to the Swiss border by Sunday to meet up with Family for a day together. We set off from Jandelsbrunn with our guide book for motorhome sites (borrowed from our experienced friends)!

As we were novices, we decided that for our first night we would stay on a good campsite with all facilities, and we found a really well equipped site at BadGriesbach..  And a good job we did too! We hadn’t really grasped how the frost protection button on our water tank worked. So, next morning and a quick phone call later to Bunk Campers we understood how it worked and off we went again. This time heading to Lindau on Lake Konstanz. Beautiful views and an airship passing by as we parked!

Our next stop was Kayserburg in Alsace, one of the most picturesque towns ever, and a day with family. Setting off towards Namurs we stopped for essential supplies in Fraize and parked next to another Bunk Campers Van! By coincidence it was the couple we had shared a taxi with at Munich airport! It was good to compare notes and hear of others experiences. Later that day we parked for lunch and lo and behold another Bunk Camper pulled in to the car park – just like buses you don’t see one for days and then two come along at once!

We then made our way towards Namur and parked overnight on a very interesting rural site with donkeys and sheep and geese, but nevertheless very quiet. We stopeed in Bruges for chocolate, and then down to Calais and it was all over bar the ferry crossing. We took the opportunity to visit friends in the Midlands as we travelled north towards Bunk Campers depot in Edinburgh. By the time we returned the camper, we had travelled 1450 miles!

Our camper for the trip was the 2 berth Aero, which on first appearances was compact, but we soon found that there was plenty of storage space  for our belongings, food and wine. Cooking was surprisingly easy on the two ringed burner, and we amazed ourselves  with the variety of meals we could cook with fresh local produce.

The reason we chose this particular van was as we hadn’t driven a campervan before, we were unsure how easy it would be visit towns and park up, but it turned out that none of these concerns were a problem.

What did we discover on our road trip ? The freedom of the open road, the flexibility to stay where you want, and somewhere different every night.

Would we do it again? As we have had the experience of the Aero, next time we will choose a larger van and adventure into the world of free motorhoming!!
