Germany Trip 2017: Andy and Janice’s route

We are Andy & Janice Harrower, both now retired, and live in Comrie, Dunfermline, which is only some 39km from Bunk Campers depot in Edinburgh.  We booked the trip because of the great time we had three years ago when we relocated a new Rollerteam Motorhome back to Bunk Campers  from Italy and that despite having seen a lot of the world, we had not been to Germany before!

The Germany relocation trip seemed like an ideal opportunity to remedy this and give us another chance to experience a motorhome. We are currently caravaners but are seriously considering whether it is the time to change over! It also seemed an ideal adventure to help us celebrate our 40^th anniversary year.

Having not been in Germany before, we were determined to get as scenic a perspective as possible. So, using a book from the Library titled “The Backroads of Germany” we planned a route that took in all or part of four of the detailed drives.  We traveled along the Danube, the Rhine and the Mosel on our journey back to Scotland, and to make the most of the trip, we extended our time with the motorhome by three days.

On picking up the motorhome we discovered that we had all been given a Willi Weinsberg lion which we decided would be our mascot for the journey. As such, he accompanied us on all the trips and places we visited on our adventures and he features in many of our holiday photographs.  We stayed on some lovely campsites but being parked up right on the banks of the Mosel with the cruise boats and barges going past and the vineyards on the steep hillside on the opposite bank was just one of the many highlights.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Neither Janice or I speak German but on our visit to Kloster, Wettenberg, we did a brewery tour which was only in German and as I was the nominated driver, Janice had to sample the beers for me! I did buy some to bring home to the UK and a bottle to sample later that evening when we parked for the night. We also found out that our German Phrasebook was not much assistance with restaurant menus which were mainly not available in English (Willi Weinsberg wasn’t much help with the translations either) and this all ensured a very entertaining and interesting holiday experience!

On leaving Germany on the 26^th April, we travelled via Luxembourg before stopping overnight in Rochefort, Belgium and heading north west to the coast. Next we headed south west to stop at Guines, just outside Calais, prior to catching the ferry to the UK.  In the UK, we stopped overnight at Wallingford to meet up with our son and his partner before spending our last night at Newcastleton in the Scottish borders prior to handing back SN17 AWH to Tom from Bunk Campers at their depot on 30^th April.

 

We were very impressed with the motorhome and exceptionally surprised that Bunk campers had provided a personalised number plate for me. We had a great time and are looking forward to signing up for the next relocation of new motorhomes!
