Belfast Named Best City at Guardian and Observer Travel Awards
Belfast has taken top honours at the annual Guardian and Observer awards for the “Best UK City”. The award recognises excellence in the tourism industry with this being the first time Belfast has won the top prize. Tourism in Belfast attracts 7 million visitors a year which demonstrates the strength the city’s attractions have to offer.
Belfast has scooped a top accolade at the Guardian and Observer Travel Awards 2016, winning the Best UK City award. The annual awards recognise excellence across the tourism industry, and are voted for by readers of both the Guardian and the Observer newspapers. This is the first time Belfast has won the award, however, it has previously been listed in the top five on several occasions but never winning the prestigious award.
Councillor Deirdre Hargey, Chair of Belfast City Council’s City Growth and Regeneration Committee welcomed the award for Belfast by saying, “This is testament to how far the city has come in recent years and we are thrilled that Belfast has been officially recognised by Guardian and Observer readers as their favourite city.
